So what do you do after purchasing the top Neutral Density filter, the B+W ND110 fitler in the market? This is not the easiest filter to use as you can't simply look through the lens (it'll be very very dark or completely black!!) Tips to get started:
1. Tripod! No attempt get this ND110 filter is going to get one anywhere without a stable platform to shoot at a shutter speed ranging up to minutes!
2. Compose before putting on the filter, as it'll be quite impossible to view through the lens at such as high ND.
3. Get a reading first, for eg, to get a properly exposured image. Consider setting to Aperture piority mode, F11-16 to get your scenary shape, set your focus, ISO100-200 and read off the shutter speed.
4. Shutter release and mirror lock-up activation are advised to minimise any shake.
If the shutter speed is say 1/250 seconds, then adding a 10-stop filter will slow the shutter down to ~8 seconds. So you can stay in aperture piority and take the image. If the reading of the shutter is already 0.1 second (dim lighting etc), then the shutter will slow to 150 seconds, which in aperture piority mode, this will not work. Hence the camera has to be set either manual(bulb) mode where the shutter can be triggered/released and closed at will and also a timer remote will help here too. Else a stopwatch is recommended.
