Red Dot Photo Weekly Issue #1

    Red Dot Photo Weekly #1
Introducing our new Red Dot Photo Weekly, where we'll be rounding up things to look out for, and the most interesting camera news for the week.

    CES 2012
    Upcoming Launches
Before the dust from the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 (CES 2012) has even begun to settle, camera manufacturers are keeping up the pace with new launches rumored to be scheduled only weeks after the major trade fair.

So far, Olympus Imaging has confirmed an “unveiling” event in Singapore on 8th February 2012 — for what could be their much anticipated OM-D line — sandwiched between the days Nikon Rumors point to as possible dates for a Nikon launch.

The dates — 7th February and 25th January, according to NR — are unusually close together for separate launches, although it doesn’t rule out the possibility of that happening. They are also awfully close to the 6th January launch of the D4 (only a month or so apart) and CES, which does not preclude the possiblity the launch of a major camera like the D800, but might certainly get lost in the noise coming from the excessive geeking out over the haul from CES. The D4 also is slated for launch(link to previous D4 article) sometime in mid-February, according to a Nikon spokesperson.

Speaking of which, Canon seems quiet except for news of their G1X prosumer. The 1DX, announced late last year, is slated for release in March but has no definite date for its release as of yet. But under the apparent calm you can practically hear Canon’s mental gears grinding faster under the pressure from Nikon as they pick up speed with new camera launches and an actual pre-production model that previewers have gotten their hands on.

    Dates to look out for:
8 February — Olympus Product Announcement
    25 January & 7 February — Possible Nikon Announcement
    Mid-February — Possible D4 Retail launch
March — Possible 1DX Retail launch
    March/April — Possible WT-5 Retail launch

    Hoverboard
    Now Where’s My Hoverboard?
3D cameras have been popping up throughout the whole of last year, but the need to buy additional gear just to be able to see these pictures has slowed the adoption of such cameras. That may be changing soon.

CES 2012 has seen the introduction of a consumer 3D printer by 3D Systems and pictures enhanced with stunning 3D tech by Casio so instead of having to purchase extra peripherals to see three dimensional images we’re starting to see tech that directly transforms digital image to a tangible three dimensional object i.e. 3D Prints of digitally captured images.

Before long, we should be looking at implementations in cartography, architecture, product design (just to name a few), where photographers could see an increasing role using these new technologies. Now where’s my hoverboard?
