Questions for Nikon 55 mm micro F3.5 ai'd lens

Hi, I am using the above lens on my Nikon D5000. Although I know I cannot auto focus and adjust the aperture, I also found that I cannot trigger the flash! Is there something I can do, or if I have an external flash will it work?

This lens has alot of numbers on it which I don't really understand. All I know is that I can take close up and the lens has a micro on it. The closest to the object is approx 12 cm. I don't think I can go nearer than that, otherwise the insect will run away. Can up use a close-up lens to magnify it? Will a close-up +2 give me a bigger image?

There is not much information in the web site on this lens. I must say I am happy with the lens but would like to further improve.

    Thank you for any assistance.

Do you mean you can't trigger the built-in flash or the external flash?

the closest distance you can take from a lens should be written on the lens. If it's 12cm, it's from the plane of the camera body (somewhere nearer the LCD than the front of the camera if you're looking from top view.

A +2 close-up filter will definitely give you a 'bigger' image!

If you are using an AI Lens, I believe that you will need to set your built in flash to "M" or "Manual" as all TTL or the like functions do not work; and hence could be a reason why your flash does not trigger. The same would go for an external flash; you need to set it to M. Try and see if that works.

The numbers on the lens indicates the focus distances, and some lenses have a depth of field lines to help you gauge that as well. Maybe you can take a photo of the lens and circle the area you don't understand; it would be easier to explain that way.

Closeup filters reduce the focussing distance of the lens, allowing you to bring it closer to the object and still maintain a sharp image, thus giving you the impression that the image is bigger. But if you do not wish to go closer, then the close-up lens may not help you. And micro/macro lenses area already designed to allow you to go really close. If working distance is a problem for you, then you will need a longer focal lengh macro lens, such as the 100mm ones; that will allow you to maintain the same object size, at a larger working distance.

Hope this helps! And do feel free to ask more here!

After many field tests, confirm I can't use the flash even in M mode. So, if you are into flash photography, cannot use such lens. Ok if I taking outdoor because I can compensate via settings. For indoor, I think I need artificial lighting.

Hi, I checked with Nikon service centre this morning and they are so helpful. This guy couldn't answer me and promised to check and get back. Yes, he got the answer alright.

This is for those with the same situation and is looking for an answer. You just got to go to manual and set the flash from iTTL to manual. I tested now and it works! I am so happy as I was thinking of selling my lens to upgrade to a full AF-S lens. Now I can keep this lens. It is a wonderful lens and the images are just sharp.
