I AM THE BIG PICTURE

Nikon launched the D800 today with greatly increased resolving power — more than twice the megapixel count of the D4. Skeptics have jumped on the high megapixel count, picking on the most obvious flaw in the pushing megapixels: that packing more megapixels while not increasing sensor size will only reduce image quality.

But what was shown at Nikon Singapore's D800 launch today was a display of unexpectedly high resolving power. Nikon claims that the "effective pixel count" of the D800 is 36.3 megapixels. Whether it is a hardware or software upgrade from the usual FX CMOS sensors, Nikon could not confirm at press time. But from the sample images shown, we are able to see that the D800's sensor is able capture an astonishing amount of detail.
