The Panasonic GF5 probably has come a little sooner than most people expected — despite all the rumours and pictures of the camera floating around for the past few months — because the last time Panasonic released a GF camera was the GF3 in August 2011. The Panasonic GF5 is more of an update than a refresh of the entire line, keeping what has worked for the GF3 and tweaking almost everything to make a better camera.

Sony takes another stab at the DSLR market with another addition to its Sony SLT (Single Lens Translucent) camera series the A57.
The Sony A57 follows their line of enthusiast DSLRs that combine high versatility with beginner friendly features such as their new Auto Portrait Framing feature that lets anyone who picks up the camera make good pictures with the A57. The

It continues to use the same Electronic Viewfinder as the A55 that may turn off some users, but in exchange the Sony A57's Single Translucent Lens system allows its users to shoot at a higher frame-rate than typical DSLRs and allows quick autofocusing even when shooting continuously or in video mode. The A57 also incorporates several in-camera image processing enhancements such as Sony's Clear Image Zoom technology that, according to Sony, uses an algorithm that allows up to 2x zoom on images with minimal loss of image quality.

Canon launched the third edition in their 5D series today, marking the end of the month-long wait since its sighting in Kenya by photographer Stephen Oachs (it was the 5D MkIII). The Canon 5D MkIII combines the best of it's predecessors — the Canon 7D and the 5D MkII — and puts them together in a solid magnesium-alloy package that produces stunning images and beautiful videos that the Canon xD series has become known for.

10-Stop Neutral Density (ND) Filter Comparison: B+W vs NiSi

Mention B+W and if the person listening didn't hear properly he may mistake you for talking about cars. In the context of photography though, everyone knows this brand is synonymous for their quality glass filters. What kind of filters you ask - UV (Ultra-Violet), Circular Polariser and Neutral Density filters.

Most are familiar with UV filters as these are purchased not so much to reduce UV, more to protect the lens investment. The others are used as light modifiers to control or change the way and amount of light captured by the camera sensor. The favourite filter amongst landscape photographers is the Neutral Density (ND) filter. It is actually necessity for modifying the light especially in situation where the composition has a wide degree of brightness between areas of the scene. The standard ND filter has a constant darkness across the filter. A related filter is the GND (Graduated Neutral Density) and it is available in a 'Soft' or 'Hard' edge. The GND has a decreasing darkness across the filter. This makes the GND good for photographing scenes different brightness like that of the sun rising against the horizon and the dark foreground. In instances of irregular foreground objects most users like to use the 'Soft' graduated ND filter. That's a whole other debate so let's move on.

By decreasing the amount of light entering the lens, the length of time that the shutter has to be open is increased (longer time in tenths or even whole seconds). A side effect of longer exposure times leads to special effects. The effect creates a motion like blur for the scene on objects that are in motion. A good example of this is the movement of water like that of a waterfall or even that of the sea. When captured in a long exposure the water looks creamy white or whatever the base primary colour of the water is unless there's a lot of white foam/bubbles.

Sony launched the Sony SAL500F40G 500mm A-Mount Telephoto Lens yesterday -- the latest addition to their G lens range. The lens is the longest G lens released to-date, and can be paired with an APSC A-Mount camera and a 1.4x SAL14TC Teleconverter to give you a 1050mm (35mm equivalent) focal length at f/8 with autofocus, according to Sony.

The Sony SAL500F40G 500mm telephoto is designed with interlocking weather seals that keep dust and moisture out of the lens, making it a perfect complement to the weather sealed Sony SLT-A77 (α77).

Olympus — amidst the rising tide of mirrorless systems — has revived it’s legacy OM SLR line and released a tank of a camera that is the Olympus OM-D EM5.

With 40 years of legacy behind its OM cameras, Olympus is returning to a formula that they are familiar with — cameras that look good and perform under difficult situations. Its Olympus Digital E-series were a far cry from the Olympus OM-x SLRs (with the exception of the well-built E-5), which were known for their legendary hardiness and were built during a time where the onus of image quality rested not on the camera but on the lens and the film used. Right now Olympus claims that their OMD series are weather sealed throughout, including its accessories i.e. external flashes, vertical grips, lenses.

    I AM THE BIG PICTURE

Nikon launched the D800 today with greatly increased resolving power — more than twice the megapixel count of the D4. Skeptics have jumped on the high megapixel count, picking on the most obvious flaw in the pushing megapixels: that packing more megapixels while not increasing sensor size will only reduce image quality.

But what was shown at Nikon Singapore's D800 launch today was a display of unexpectedly high resolving power. Nikon claims that the "effective pixel count" of the D800 is 36.3 megapixels. Whether it is a hardware or software upgrade from the usual FX CMOS sensors, Nikon could not confirm at press time. But from the sample images shown, we are able to see that the D800's sensor is able capture an astonishing amount of detail.
