Racing along Turns 1, 2 and 3 of the Marina Bay Circuit and next to the iconic Singapore Flyer, Tengku Djan Ley displayed experience and outstanding car-handling abilities to edge out compatriot, Tan Tat Wei in a highly entertaining final showdown after three rounds of competition today. With both cars barely kissing the barricade walls in the final runs, Tengku prevailed by being the more consistent driver.
“I am really happy with my achievement this weekend. This competition was a wonderful platform for me to improve myself to try to bring my driving to another level. It is definitely not easy being out on the track, as every run is different and getting the right speed and angle at entry was not easy. I am happy with how I controlled my aggression out there and to have won the title,” said a delighted Djan.
An emotional Tan Tat Wei summed up his weekend simply, saying, “It has been a more difficult competition overall as compared to last year, but I’ve pushed myself all the way and I am just very happy.”
Meanwhile, rookie driver Daniel ‘Fanga Dan’ Woolhouse (NZ) from Team Goodyear edged out the flamboyant Davide Dorigo (THA) to claim third place and a podium finish. The top three drivers picked up crucial points for the Formula DRIFT Asian Series, which includes legs in Indonesia, Thailand and the Grand Final in Malaysia later this year.
Twenty-six drivers featured in the first round of the main competition today, after the top three drivers in yesterday’s qualifying session – Ryuji Miki (JPN), Atsushi Murata (JPN) and Tengku Djan Ley (MAS), were given a bye into the Round of 16. Unlike yesterday’s session, which saw drivers judged on individual runs on the track, the format of competition today involved drift battles between two cars in tandem each time. Only one driver would emerge victorious after two runs and progress to the next round. However, if the judges were undecided on the winner, both drivers would hit the track for an additional two runs.
With one car as the leader and the other the chaser, the drivers were judged on their speed, style and ability to maintain the best drift angle possible. The drivers pushed their cars hard throughout the day past tight corners and clipping points, which meant that there were many aggressive and close battles along with spin-outs and crashes.
Indeed, it was the Round of 16 which provided most of the day’s best action. Some of the highlights of the round included favourites Ryuji Miki (JPN) and Atsushi Murata (JPN) failing to progress in the competition after being edged out by Rhenadi Arinton (INA) and Hanizam Bin Hamzah (MAS) respectively.
In the Great 8 round, even closer tandem battles for got the crowd roaring – however, it was the battle of the final four that got the crowd on their feet and ended the event in a spectacular style.
The next leg of the Formula DRIFT Asian Series will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia followed by Bangkok, Thailand and will conclude with the Grand Final in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Dates will be announced shortly. For more information on the Formula Drift Singapore Powered by Nissan, please go to the official website at http://www.formuladrift.com.sg/.
